The early morning game drive will offer spectacular views of the elephants as they bathe in the swamps or graze. Keep an eye out for other wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, hippos, and wildebeest. You'll enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and then continue the afternoon game drive, focusing on areas that are rich in wildlife. The drive takes about two hours, passing through rolling hills and Maasai villages, where you might catch a glimpse of traditional Maasai herders with their cattle. Upon entering the park, you will be greeted by its stunning landscape, dominated by towering baobab trees, which stand like ancient sentinels over the golden savanna. Tarangire is famous for its large elephant population, often seen in family herds cooling off at the Tarangire River, which serves as the park’s lifeline, especially in the dry season. Your game drive will take you through open grasslands and dense acacia woodlands, where you can spot lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and over 500 bird species like weavers, starlings and Moongose. As you travel across the floor of this extinct volcano, you’ll be able to observe a variety of animals. Lions rest in the tall grass while elephants roam the forests. The crater is also home to a small population of black rhinos, which are rarely seen in other areas of Tanzania. Ngorongoro is an excellent place for birdwatching, too. You’ll likely see flamingos, pelicans, and Egyptian geese near the Ngorongoro Crater Lake, as well as raptors like eagles and vultures soaring overhead.
