The population of Morondava has tripled in the space of fifty years and counts approximately 72,000 inhabitants. Morondava is populated mainly by the Sakalava and Vezo people, as well as a notable Indo-Pakistani colony, arrived at the time of French colonization and paid into the trade, by a few descendants of mixed Chinese and European races, and since the independence of the colony of the Comorians. Its name means in the Malagasy language "the large beach" as a contraction of "morona lava". Economically, fishing is the main activity of the region, especially shellfish. Morondava is also a shipyard with a mechanical workshop. Around the city, rice, corn, cassava, and cotton are grown; sugar (by the Chinese) and zebus are raised.
