Day 1
Your journey to Gombe begins upon landing at Kigoma Airport, where the warm, humid climate announces your arrival near Lake Tanganyika. You’ll be transferred to Kibirizi Port to take in sweeping views of the lake’s deep blue waters before boarding a private motorboat. The scenic crossing takes approximately 1.5–2 hours, gliding past traditional fishing boats and a pristine, forest-lined shoreline that offers a first glimpse of the remote wilderness ahead. On arrival, the boat lands directly on the sandy beach within Gombe National Park, where the sounds of the forest welcome you. You’ll be guided to your lodge to settle in and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch. The remainder of the afternoon is free for relaxation—take a gentle walk along the lakeshore, enjoy a refreshing swim, or unwind on your veranda while soaking in the tranquil surroundings. Day 2
After an early breakfast, you head into Gombe’s dense forest for the highlight of your safari—chimpanzee tracking. Guided by knowledgeable park rangers, you’ll navigate winding and sometimes steep trails as they draw on their deep understanding of the terrain and recent chimp movements. The sounds of the forest build anticipation until you finally come face to face with a chimpanzee family, observing their social interactions in the wild. Following this remarkable experience, you may choose to hike to the peaceful Kakombe Waterfalls, spend additional time observing the chimpanzees, or explore more of Gombe’s rich ecosystem, where red-tailed monkeys, baboons, and a vibrant array of birdlife may be seen. Day 3
Today offers another opportunity for immersive chimpanzee tracking, possibly with a different group, allowing you to observe their intricate social behaviors up close. As you watch them forage, play, and move through the forest, your guide will share fascinating insights about their lives and the ongoing research inspired by Jane Goodall. The trek may also take you to scenic viewpoints like Jane’s Peak, offering sweeping panoramas of the park and the expansive waters of Lake Tanganyika. After a relaxed lunch at your lodge, the afternoon presents several options: enjoy a peaceful boat excursion on Lake Tanganyika, taking in the forested hills from the water while spotting fish eagles, or embark on a focused birdwatching walk through the park’s rich forest habitats. Upon arrival in Kigoma, you’ll be transferred to your hotel or a local restaurant for lunch. If time permits before your flight, you may explore Kigoma town, including a visit to the Dr. Livingstone Memorial in Ujiji.
