Overview
The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are set high in Ethiopia's highlands, about 701km (436mi) from Addis Ababa. Carved from solid volcanic rock in the 12th-13th centuries under King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela, these eleven churches were envisioned as a "new Jerusalem" for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. Still in active use, they remain a deeply sacred pilgrimage site and a remarkable feat of medieval architecture--a testament to Ethiopia's spiritual and cultural heritage.

Upon arrival at Lalibela Airport, you will be welcomed by your driver and guide and transferred to your hotel. After check-in and lunch, begin your discovery of Lalibela with a visit to the North-Eastern cluster of its world-famous rock-hewn churches. Carved directly from solid rock and linked by narrow passageways, these medieval masterpieces remain both architectural wonders and spiritual treasures. Hike to Asheton Maryam & Cultural Experience
After an early breakfast, set out on a hike or short drive to the hilltop monastery of Asheton Maryam. Perched high on a ridge, this sacred site offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding highlands and a glimpse into Ethiopia's rich spiritual heritage. Return to Lalibela for lunch, then continue your exploration with a visit to the second cluster of rock-hewn churches, distinguished by their unique architectural styles and symbolic designs. In the evening, immerse yourself in local traditions with a cultural cooking class followed by a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony at a local home—an authentic way to experience Lalibela's warm hospitality. We were paired with two guides, Melaku and "Geech". Both of whom were amazing. Very friendly and knowledgeable about the areas we visited and the local flora and fauna. "Geech" is the best driver in the business and Melaku took us to his childhood home to have a coffee ceremony with his mom and his sister. Unforgettable additions to the trip. If Ethiopia is not on your list it should be. Timket is absolutely a must. But there is too much to see in one trip. Will definitely be going back for the Omo Valley.

Weekend trip to Lalibela.
An amazing spiritual journey deep in the heart of Ethiopia. Lalibela was an absolute amazing trip so rich with culture and history thanks to our fabulous tour guide Muluye. He gave us a lot of intriguing information and he knew all the best spots for pictures. He also invited us to his humble home for a coffee cermony. Ansolutely amazing weekend trip and a must visit in Ethiopia
