Day 1
Arrive at Lilongwe International Airport, where you’ll be welcomed by your local guide. Enjoy a comfortable transfer to Kumbali Country Lodge, a calm retreat just outside the city, set on a working farm. After check-in, take time to relax and soak in the peaceful surroundings. Day 2
After a hearty breakfast at Kumbali Lodge, you’ll set off for a half-day visit to Chingalire Village, located just outside Lilongwe. This vibrant community project offers a rich and immersive cultural experience. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed with traditional music and dance performances by local artists, showcasing Malawi’s diverse cultural heritage and participate in traditional cooking. Engage with the villagers as they share stories, demonstrate crafts, and explain daily rural life. It’s a chance to interact meaningfully and support sustainable tourism. In the afternoon, continue to Lilongwe's World War I Memorial Tower, a significant historical site honoring Malawian soldiers who fought in the Great War. Climb the tower for sweeping views of the capital and the surrounding plains—a great photo opportunity and a moment of reflection. Return to Kumbali Lodge in the late afternoon. After breakfast at Kumbali Lodge, check out and begin your journey east toward Salima, heading for the golden shores of Senga Bay on Lake Malawi. The drive offers changing scenery as you leave the highlands and approach the lakeshore. Upon arrival, check in at the charming Casa Constancini Lodge, a lakeside retreat with stunning views of Lake Malawi. Spend your afternoon enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. Take a refreshing swim in the lake’s clear waters, relax on the beach, or explore the shoreline. Day 4
After breakfast at Casa Constancini Lodge, depart for Mua Mission, one of Malawi’s most important cultural and historical sites. Visit the KuNgoni Centre of Culture & Art, where you’ll explore a fascinating museum showcasing the traditions of Malawi’s three major ethnic groups. Learn about local history, art, and customs through beautifully crafted displays and wood carvings by skilled local artisans. After your cultural visit, continue south toward Cape Maclear, arriving by early afternoon. From here, board a boat to the stunning Mumbo Island, a secluded eco-retreat on Lake Malawi. Arrive and check in at the charming Zomba Forest Lodge, nestled in a tranquil forest setting on the slopes of the Zomba Plateau. After settling in and enjoying a homemade lunch, spend the afternoon exploring the natural beauty surrounding the lodge. Take a guided hike through the forest trails, rich in indigenous trees, waterfalls, and stunning viewpoints over the valley below. I had a 12-Day safari & cultural journey in Malawi and South Luangwa (Zambia) with remarkable experience & memories. I visited three national parks: MAJETE, LIWONDE, and LUANGWA. My itinerary started from Blantyre via Lilongwe to South Luangwa before getting back to Lilongwe for my inbound flight. The full-board quote was indeed designed and tailored according to my interest. The program contained detailed information one may need. All transports, incl. airport transfers, were taken care using a private car with Chikondi as a skilled driver. She always showed up according to the plan. Chikondi was informative and flexible to provide answer to my numerous questions & curiousness about the society, culture, nature, etc. during many hours of our road transport. All the accommodations (Thawale Lodge, Huntingdon House, Zomba Forest Lodge, Latitude Hotel, Flatdogs Camp, and Lilongwe Quest lodges and safaris) were of great standards with professional services. Except Kutchire Lodge in Liwonde National Park which is to consider as a “very-low-budget” lodge. Nearly everything was in poor condition with low value. But all the staffs were friendly and tried their best. However, that didn’t overshadow my overall experience through the entire journey in Malawi & Zambia.
