Day 1
Your 12 Days Rwenzori trekking Uganda Wildlife experience safari will begin with our guide picking you up from Entebbe International Airport or your hotel in Entebbe. Thereafter transfer to Murchison falls national park via Kampala-Luwero-Masindi route with a stopover at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary to track the white Rhinos in the wild, break for lunch. There after proceed to the top of the falls in the Murchison falls national park for waterfalls experience and finally drive to the lodge to retire for an overnight. Travel time: 4-5 hours. Day 2
Have breakfast by 6am and thereafter proceed to the wilderness in search of the early morning raisers, the morning game drive starts at about 6:30am. Look out for animals such as; the giraffes, lions, hyenas, water bucks, elephants, buffalos, antelopes. Many species of birds such as; egrets, ibis, shoebill stock, marabou stock, king fisher, etc. As you have your game drive, you may relax and have a picnic on the river bank as you listen to the groans of the Hippos. After lunch break, proceed for afternoon boat cruise on the Nile River. This cruise is spectacular as you to get up close to the aquatic animals such as; the hippos, crocodiles, water bucks, buffalos, elephants etc. Among the birds commonly sighted on the boat cruise include the goliath heron, king fisher, weaver birds, bee eater, cattle egrets. Not forgetting the beautiful scenery along the bank. Take photos as you return back to the boat point. Day 3
After breakfast, transfer to Kasese via Fort portal which is a 7-8 hours’ drive. En-route, enjoy the jaw dropping sceneries, landscapes. You will enjoy views of the Great rift valley before proceeding to Hoima. Have an enroute hot lunch break. Arrive and check in at your lodge in Kasese, relax as you prepare your gear for the next trekking activity. Day 4
Have an early morning breakfast and check out of your accommodation to begin your travel to Kasese. Begin your ascent of the Mountains of the moon via the central circuit trail. The drive takes 2 hours. Rwenzori mountain climbing via the central circuit trail starts at the Rwenzori Mountains National park Mihunga gate. Your driver guide will drive you to Mihunga gate for the trip briefing and organising your equipment. The trail begins by passing through farmland to the park boundary beyond which it follows a thick forest along the Mubuku River. Cross the Mahoma River tributary before starting a long, steep climb up onto a massive ridge to reach Nyabitaba hut. During this part of the trip you may hear chimpanzee and see black and white colobus, blue monkey and the brilliantly coloured Rwenzori turaco. Day 5
From Nyabitaba follow the trail that drops down through the forest to the Kurt Shaffer Bridge, just below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. Passing through the bamboo forest, traverse through a long and exhausting stretch of slippery moss-covered rock. From the Nyamuleju rock shelter, Mount Stanley and Mount Speke can be seen before passing into the zone of the giant heather, lobelia and groundsel. Finally reach John Matte Hut after passing through the tiring bog, for dinner and overnight at the hut. Hike duration: 7 – 8 hours. Elevation height: 854m. Day 6
From John Matte Hut the trail drops down to cross the Bujuku River and enters Lower Bigo Bog, the home of giant lobelias. Jumping from tussock to tussock, the bog is finally crossed but rarely without the feet sampling some of the freezing ooze below. The upper Bigo bog gives way to Bujuku Lake, with views of Mount Baker to the South and Mt Stanley to the West. Bujuku Hut, well located in the shadow of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, is set in a narrow valley below Stuhlmanns Pass. This camp is good for acclimatization for clients attempting the summits of peaks Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Dinner and overnight at Bujuku hut. Hike duration: 4 – 5 hours. Day 7
Early in the morning start the hike through stullmans pass (4192m asl.) and spectacular views of Virunga National park of DR Congo to Vittorio Emanuele peak (4890m asl). Ascend duration: 4 – 5 hours. Elevation height: 230m Prepare to descend back to Bujuku camp from Vittorio Emanuele with views of Bujuku valley and Bujuku lake, Margherita and Albert peaks on Mount Stanley and Mount Baker. Day 8
Leaving Bujuku camp, the trail takes you through more bog, while climbing the steep slopes west of the lake and through the magical forest of Groundsel Gully. Turn to your right up to Elena Hut just below Mount Luigi di Savoia. The trail on your left leads to Scott-Elliot Pass down to Kitandara Lakes camp. For those not climbing Margherita Peak, descend for an overnight at Kitandara camp. Those climbing the peak will have their Dinner and overnight at the coolly and Icy Elena Hut. Day 9
Wake up very early in the morning at 2am, you attempt climbing the highest peak, Margherita of Mount Stanley. To reach the summit of Margherita, the climb takes about 4 -5 hours. Depending on the weather conditions and the pace of climbing this mountain and at an ascent elevation of 568m. Rwenzori mountains trekking This tough walk takes you over three glaciers, slippery rock, ice and very exposed areas which are open on many sides. Climbing on to the glaciers, cross the Stanley Plateau and proceed with the ascent. Acclimatized to fog, altitude sickness and coolly weather, scramble up to the summit of Margherita the highest peak of the Rwenzori mountains. The Descend from Margherita peak back to Elena Hut for 2 to 3 hours. After your lunch at Elena hut, descend through Scott Elliot pass 4372m asl, where there are spectacular views of Lake Bujuku and Mount Speke. The trail passes you through an alpine zone of sparse vegetation and rough boulders, kitandara hut for overnight. Day 10
From Kitandara, take on the trail that ascends steeply up the headwall, spreading out from the base of Mount Baker. Continue along the south side of the mountain to Fresh field Pass 4282m asl. At this point you can view into the Congo to the west and Mount Stanley to the north. From the pass, take on the long high alpine moss. Thereafter descend through steep rocky trails and the rock shelter at Bujongolo, the base camp for the historic expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi in 1906. Have an overnight at Guy yeoman camp. Day 11
Below Guy Yeoman, the route descends the cliffs of Kichuchu. Beyond Kichuchu the muddy path crosses the Mubuku River twice through a bamboo forest before climbing downwards to Nyabitaba to complete the circuit. Descend back to Nyabitaba Camp and then Mihunga gate to be picked by your driver guide for an overnight in Kasese town. Descent duration: 7 – 8 hours Dinner and overnight stay in Kasese town. Day 12
Have an early morning breakfast and transfer to Kampala for another Uganda trip or Entebbe for your departure back home. 5.0/5Johnson was our guide and driver for our 12 days in Uganda. I had asked for specific activities for all our days. This was my 3rd time in Uganda. He helped plan every day, so it was full and exciting. Our days were planned to the maximum. I wanted to hike, explore the mountain trails, eat local fruits, visit my friends in Kasese and make a trip to the local hospital to visit a small child we support. Our 3 days of safari trips were wonderful. He even accommodated me when I asked if we could share our jeep with children we support. One morning on the way to Queen Elizabeth NP there was a man with his stranded motor bike standing on the side of the road. Johnson stopped and asked if he was OK. He told us it was not safe standing alone on the road near the QENP area. He offered to give the man enough gasoline to get him into town to the station. Many persons might not have stopped. I was very impressed with his willingness to help this person. He even offered to pay a bill for me because I did not have the correct amount. I cannot tell you how much I was impressed with this young man. I plan to see him for my next trip back to Uganda.

We did a trek in January 2024 in Rwenzori mountains, started from Kasanzi region through camps of Kasanzi, Bekambo, Lami, John Maata hut, Elena hut to Margherita peak, then back to John Maata hut through Irene lake hut and out of the park along the Central cirquit, Bujuku and Mubuku river with lunch in Nyabitaba hut. 7 days, 6 nights in the mountains.
