Day 2

Kigali city tour

Your full day Kigali city tour covers some of the most historically and culturally significant sites in the Rwandan capital. The exact order of your tour will depend upon your start time, but your tour will include the following activities: Natural History Museum Formerly known as the Kandt House, the Natural History Museum was built by German explorer, Richard Kandt. The building itself has special significance as the first modern house built in what is today Rwanda. Genocide Memorial No visit to Rwanda would be complete without paying a visit to the heart-wrenching Genocide Memorial. Part heartfelt tribute and part educational experience, this memorial recounts the tale of the infamous 1994 Rwandan Genocide, discusses the work being done to heal the country today, and offers a window into the people whose lives were irreversibly changed by the Genocide. In the morning, you will drive to Akagera National Park. You'll then enjoy a day long game drive through the small but remarkably diverse park. Day 4

While Rwanda is not often thought of as a Big Five safari destination, Akagera National Park in the country's east is emerging as one of the best off-the-beaten-path safari destinations in East Africa. After the 1994 Rwandan Genocide led to an increase in poaching that threatened the park's viability, recent efforts to transplant rhinos and lions into the park have meant it is now a true Big Five park: with elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, and buffalo now calling the park home. Day 6

Three upland lakes hike - Lake Bunyoni

Lake Bunyoni A short tour around the forested peninsula will show you some pretty interesting things. After a detailed briefing session the paddling will begin at 10am. Under the auspices of young skippers who have grown up on the lake, this will be a piece of cake. The first program item on the terraced hillsides of the Kyabahinga peninsula will be a dancing and singing presentation by nursery school pupils. The prize for your next activity, a relatively intense climb of about 30 minutes, will be tremendous lake vistas. Kyabahinga is uniquely located to give you an outlook over most of Lake Bunyonyi, its 29 islands and the distant Virunga volcanoes. You will hear the colourful tales, legends and historical facts related to the islands. Day 7

From Lake Bunyoni to Lake Kayumbu

Lake Bunyonyi — Echuya Forest Reserve — Lake Kayumbu You will wake up on Habukomi Island some 30 minutes away from the Kyabahinga peninsula. On this island of pelicans our legendary nightwatchman Tom Karemire runs a homestay. He shows you around the island, tells you stories and prepares meals for you. For example, freshly made chapatis with local honey will be your breakfast delight. The canoes will transport you to the other shore of Bunyonyi and from there you will slowly but surely ascend towards Echuya Forest Reserve, reaching it at around midday. In Echuya you will be part of something unique: a Batwa “Pygmy”-guided nature trail. There is a swamp in the middle of Echuya that calls for rubber boots. The crossing of the woods is expected to take about 2 hours. Your picnic lunch will take place above the twin Lakes of Kayumbu and Chahafi. Day 8

Lake Kayumbu to Lake Mutanda

Following your lakeshore breakfast you will start hiking towards Kisoro Town, through rural but densely populated areas. Compared to the rest of the itinerary, this section is strikingly flat. Coffee Pot Cafe in the middle of Kisoro is owned by a German lady who makes excellent food. After lunch you will take about 3 hours to reach Lake Mutanda, visiting a coffee farming family on the hill in between. Even those who aren’t ardent coffee drinkers appreciate the expert guidance and the outlook over the lake. A short motorboat ride will then bring you to a narrow island in the south of Mutanda, called Gahiza. Unmarried pregnant girls were traditionally left on this Punishment Island as a warning to other youngsters. With loads of rabbits on the island you won’t be surprised by what comes on the plate. Lake Mutanda to Bwindi National Park

Day 9

Lake Mutanda to Bwindi National Park

The isle of Gahiza is pleasant enough that you will love a slow morning. By midday the island’s motorboat will start moving towards Chameleon Hill Lodge, your fantastically colourful lunch break place on the extreme northern tip of Lake Mutanda. On another island, Buhingiro, a colonial-era chief would set up camp while hunting hippos. Locals say hippo meat was at first a delicacy beloved by Batwa ”Pygmies” but later became everybody’s interest. Now they are long gone, but there is a peculiar hippopotamus tale from 2013 that connects Lake Mutanda and Lake Bunyonyi … You have had astonishing surface-level views of the Virungas by now, but Chameleon Hill Lodge lies a bit higher and new panoramic dimensions will embrace as you eat. At 2pm you will hit the village trails for 3-4 hours, taking you nearly to the outer edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Once at Rushaga, a place with one of Bwindi’s four entry gates, you may start preparing for the national park fun you have chosen. Day 10

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi NP

After breakfast at your hotel, you'll proceed directly to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park's headquarters to meet your guides. After completing the briefing, you'll embark on the once in a lifetime experience of tracking the enigmatic mountain gorillas. There is no guarantee how long or difficult your tracking experience will be as it depends on where the family of gorillas is and on weather conditions, It can take anywhere from two up to six hours of trekking through the mountain forest at relatively high altitudes. Fitness is definitely recommended for those wishing to undertake the excursion. One of the most memorable experiences you're likely to ever have, you'll be allowed an hour of close contact with the gorillas once you've found them. You'll be privileged enough to come within mere metres of a family of these rare and beautiful animals, observing their family dynamics and getting to learn a bit about each gorilla's distinct personality in serene silence. Day 11

Full day journey from Bwindi to Nyungwe Forest

Today you will embark on the long but beautiful journey from Bwindi in Uganda to Nyungwe in Rwanda. Nyungwe is home to no less than 280 different bird species, 26 of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift. You will look for great blue turacos, paradise flycatchers, green pigeons, Ross’ turacos, red-breasted sparrow hawks, handsome francolins and strange weavers, to name just a few. There are a lot of interesting primates living in the park, such as busy babies and sloths, but the most notable of Nyungwe’s inhabitants are the chimpanzees of which at least 500 are currently living in the park. Meet the Chimps

You will rise early to enjoy breakfast and embark on a quest to locate Rwanda's elusive and endangered chimpanzee population. With only four hundred chimpanzees in the country, there is no guarantee that you will see chimpanzees during your day hike, but your Shadows of Africa guide will do everything possible to provide you with a glimpse of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. Even if you are not lucky enough to see a chimpanzee, the national park is a wonderfully diverse place that you can explore both in the morning during your chimpanzee hunt and after lunch. In the afternoon, you will set out in search of another primate in the park—the cheeky black-and-white colobus monkey. These playful primates are easier to spot than chimpanzees, and you will enjoy watching their antics. Simply Outstanding

Visiting the gorillas in Rwanda has been a longstanding bucket-list trip for my wife and me. We decided that this was to be the year and so we asked Shadows of Africa to design a tour for us to go to Rwanda but also to add on a safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. We were lucky to have been assigned Karin Maki as our consultant as she was so helpful and patient with our wishlist and frequent changes of itinerary. We really felt that her entire focus was on making sure that we got what we wanted. She was responsive to our questions within a few hours and kept in touch with us while we were on our trip to check that everything was going as planned. Karin’s planning was meticulous but it was matched by the Shadows of Africa team’s execution. It was outstanding - everyone turned up every day at exactly the time they were supposed to, everyone was smiling, patient and keen to ensure that we were happy with our safari. In Rwanda our driver was Jeanisse and she got us to the mountains and back with absolutely no drama even though the roads were occasionally tricky with many slow moving vehicles. She also arranged a couple of surprises for us to celebrate our wedding anniversary which we very much appreciated. In Tanzania, after a briefing by Dennis to welcome us, we met our driver Eugen. When he picked us up to take us to the Serengeti he asked us what we particularly wanted to see. We told him that we really wanted to see the big cats and within 3 hours of entering the Serengeti we had seen lion, serval, leopard and cheetah twice - once on a kill. We were totally blown away by that experience and it simply underlines how the team at Shadows of Africa were absolutely dedicated to making this trip the best we have ever had. Eugen was very responsive to any requests we had and was flexible in the starting times each day depending on how we felt. One day he organized a morning drive with a stop for coffee on the plains and in the afternoon we repeated the experience but this time with a glass of wine while we watched the sunset - absolutely magical. Eugen knew the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater so well and with him as a guide we saw pretty much everything we wanted to - and more. My wife and I have travelled the world over the past 40 years or so and we’ve experienced some fabulous trips and destinations but this ranks as one of our best ever trips and that’s entirely due to the Shadows of Africa team - they were all just fantastic.

Beyond fabulous!!!

Shortly after starting my research about a trip to Kenya and Tanzania, it became clear that Shadows of Africa was the leading contender for our trip of a lifetime. Karen, the travel agent for Shadows of Africa, was incredibly communicative, providing several possible itineraries for our desired travel dates. We booked somewhat late (In January, for a late-August/early September adventure) and she was still able to provide us with exceptional options at various price points to suit our budget. Shadows of Africa provided special touches, along with absolutely phenomenal food and beverage options, exceptionally experienced guides, and clean, comfortable safari vehicles. Our guide in Kenya was Joji, who ensured we saw as many wild animals from perfect vantage points as possible, while providing in-depth information about the creatures we were seeing. Our guide in Tanzania was Moody, who was also phenomenal at finding wild animals, never rushing us away from any viewing point and always answering our many questions about each species. We were able to learn so much from both of our guides, and we saw every single species that we had hoped to- far more than we could have found on our own in the same amount of time. The quality of the lodges Karen helped us select, the extensive menu we were treated to during our experience with Shadows of Africa, the warmth and knowledge of our guides, and the truly exceptional adventures we were able to have on our trip would not have been possible without this absolutely phenomenal company.

Epic! Trip of a lifetime!!!

Epic! Amazing! Exceptional! But words really can't do justice to the the experience we had with Shadows of Africa Tanzanian Safari. We felt like we were part of a National Geographic special. We saw so many animals, so close up. Herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, lions, hyenas, warthogs, moneys, baboons. We counted more than 45 different species of animals and birds, and I'm sure our list is not complete. We spent eight days on safari in Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, which also included a visit to a Maasai village, a sunrise balloon ride followed by three nights at a resort on Zanzibar. The accommodations were amazing. The lodges were beautiful and even the tent camps were way more luxurious than we expected, complete with giraffes walking by and lions roaring at night. Our guide was Alex Pao (or Poa?) and he was exceptional!!! We were a group of six women and he kept us all in line:) Knowledgeable, funny, professional, accommodating. And finally, I would like to give a shout out to the Shadows of Africa team -- Karen Maki, Frank and Inge! They were wonderful, responsive, accommodating. I can't say enough good things about them or our experience as a whole and would highly recommend them to anyone considering a Safari experience!

Easily the best experience of my life

Apologies as this will be a long review, as I tend to write a lot. The 11 day safari with Shadows of Africa easily was the best trip of my life. First, let me start with Karen. Karen treats you like she's been your friend for a long time that just happens to be a safari specialist as she's extremely personable and clearly wants you to have the best possible experience. Despite being 10 hours ahead of me, she responded to any and all questions I have within minutes and I question if she ever takes a break. Throughout the whole process, she has been amazing...Karen, if you read this, I can't thank you enough. My other notable tour specialist was Frank that handled everything in Tanzania. Frank...Frank is on top of everything, literally calling me the second we got to the Tanzanian border, giving us suggestions on how to tip, what to do, and literally was on top of everything in Tanzania. Also, Frank is extremely genuine as well, following up daily regarding how things are going, what we love(d), and is again is just on top of everything. Secondly, the guides. Our first guide was George who clearly has a ton of experience in Masa Mara and Kenya, and was on top of where to go and was on top of where all the animals were. George is very nice guy and on day 2 of safari I was elated on the experience he gave us and also can't say enough great things about that man. Our second guide, Charles Joseph, is younger, super enthusiastic, and is obviously very proud of his country and loves sharing whatever he can about Tanzania as well as anything related to plants and animals. Also, after traveling with him for a week I'm seriously impressed on how he can remember where everything is throughout such a massive area without a map, as I need GPS to go across town. We did have a transfer, Nickson, great young kid who is also enthusiastic about his town and country; hope his pig farming business goes well. Lastly, our last guide, Martin, friggin pro at everything Amboseli, suggesting good photo shots of Kilimanjaro, animals, and again, extremely knowledgeable about the region. Lastly, a far as the accommodations and food, everything was top notch. We did do the 11 day tour and the nights in Masa Mara and Northern Sarengheti were in raised tents, but the staff more than made up for it as, how often in your life do you see lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, elephants, etc... My only one real suggestion is if you do plan on doing the 11 day tour, if you're looking for gifts, wait to go to the large shop in Arusha as they by far have the best prices for souvenirs, as the local shops outside Masa Mara are kind of a rip. To finish, we loved our safari and if/when I come back to Africa, I will be sure to contact Shadows of Africa as they went above and beyond.
