7-Day Rock Climbing on Mt Kenya North Face Route
Overview
Best done from June to Early October. The North Face standard route starts from Shipton Camp or Kami Hut. The first two pitches are easy to scramble, another grade III then Grande II, and a Grande IV to get to the amphitheater. From there an easy walk to the base of Firmin Tower. Afterward, you will come to the knife edge you can do a Grande IV+ pitch before you come to traverse that leads to the Shipton Notch. Afterward, you will be through to Batian 5,199m highest peak of Mt Kenya.

Day 1
Nairobi/Sirimon/Judmaier Camp (Old Moses Camp) 3-4 hrs, 9km, 860m ascent
You'll be picked up from your Nairobi hotel at 7.30 am to Nanyuki town for lunch, taking about 4 hours. You will proceed to Sirimon Gate, 1 hr, 2440m. From the gate, follow the track as it winds uphill through the forest which becomes heathland after about 3 hours. About 3½ hours from the gate, the track veers right to Judmaier Camp, 3300m for dinner and an overnight stay L, D. Day 2
Judmier Camp/Shipton Camp 6-7hrs, 17km, 900m ascent
After breakfast, you'll follow the track uphill, forking left at the junction. After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses the Ontulili River. You'll go right contouring through the Moorland crossing Liki North and continue uphill to Mackinders Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main peaks. Day 3
Shiptons Camp to Kami Hut
After breakfast, you will ascend to Kami Hut 4,600m which is normally 2 hours. This day you will also use it for acclimatization. There is also an option of climbing directly from Shipton and back but for experienced climbers. Your dinner and overnight stay will be at the hut. Day 4
Kami Hut- Firmin Tower
You'll wake up early at 5:00 am, have some snacks then depart at around 5:30 am to the base of North Face, it normally takes 45 min- 1 hr. This section is rocky and Frozen scree. You'll continue climbing until you reach the starting point for Rock climbing. You will start your climbing at approximately 7:00 am. You will spend the night at Firmin Tower (10 ropes of 50m). Day 5
Firmin Tower- Batian - Shipton Camp
After breakfast from Firmin tower, Two routes emerge here, one up the tower is quite tricky and about grande V in a small gully not enough to fit in other is around the tower it's easier but longer. After you come to the knife edge, you can do a grande IV+ pitch before you come to traverse that leads to the Shipton Notch. Shipton notch rocks are lost and you need to be careful. Afterward, you will be through to Batian 5,199m highest peak of Mt Kenya at approximately noon. Later, Abseil down to the bottom and climb to Shipton Camp for dinner and an overnight stay. on Mt Kenya All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)

Day 6
Shipton Camp- Chogoria Bandas
After breakfast, you'll ascend to Simba and then down to Chogoria Bandas. Following the Gorges Valley, you will take approximately 7 hours to get to Chogoria bandas where you will take a hot shower and relax in the comfort of your bed. This walk is very scenic and you can pass by Lake Ellis. Your dinner and an overnight stay will be at the bandas. Perfect trip
A 6 day hike at Mt Kenya was very well organised, well managed and a wonderful experience.
