Visit Fasil Ghebbi (Royal Enclosure): Spend 1.5–2 hours exploring the impressive 17th-century castles and palaces. Learn about Emperor Fasilides, the founder of the complex, and its UNESCO World Heritage significance. Debre Berhan Selassie Church: Admire the richly painted ceilings featuring angels and vibrant frescoes on the walls. This is one of Ethiopia’s most iconic churches, known for its cultural and spiritual importance. Afternoon: Lunch in Gondar: Try local Ethiopian dishes at a recommended restaurant, such as Four Sisters Restaurant or Gondar Hills Resort. Fasilides' Bath: Visit this serene site surrounded by large pools and big sycamore trees, traditionally used for Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations. Evening: Explore Gondar's Local Market:. Trip to the Simien Mountains
Early Morning: Departure to Simien Mountains National Park: Drive 2-3 hours from Gondar to the park entrance in Debark. Meet your guide and scout (mandatory for park entry). Arrival at the Park: Start your trek/hike near Sankaber Camp. Spot wildlife like Gelada baboons and possibly Walia ibex, which are endemic to Ethiopia. Hike through breathtaking landscapes of jagged peaks, deep valleys, and waterfalls (e.g., Jinbar Waterfall). Option: Enjoy a packed lunch or lunch at the lodge (if arranged in advance). Observation Points: Stop at stunning viewpoints such as Geech Abyss or Chekwanit Viewpoint. Marvel at the dramatic cliffs and lush terrain. Afternoon: Bird Watching and Wildlife Spotting: See unique bird species like the thick-billed raven and lammergeier (bearded vulture). Well-organized tour
The tour was well organized. Big pros: When any issues arose, the organizer immediately intervened and rectified the situation. Points: 3-star hotels. All were clean, with showers, breakfast included. Transfers: I was met and seen off everywhere, and they helped with our luggage. There was a slight hitch when we arrived in Ethiopia at the airport. I expected to be met at the arrivals exit (this is usually the case). It turned out I had to exit the airport and walk to the parking lot, which I should have mentioned in advance. Transportation: I had private tours around Addis Ababa. The vehicle was clean and good. Around the salt lake, we traveled in a large Land Cruiser, with a driver and three tourists. No problems at all. Guides: Guides with good English. Both the guides and drivers were friendly, helpful, informative, and answered questions. No tips were required. Everything was fine. Additionally: In the area of the volcano and salt lake, you have to sleep outside. I even liked it – the view of the star is stunning. Cons: no shower or proper toilet.
