Arrival & Group A Churches
Upon arrival at Lalibela Airport, you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel for check-in and a short rest After refreshing, begin your exploration of the first group of rock-hewn churches, known as Group A, carved out of solid volcanic rock in the 12th century by King Lalibela. These include some of the most remarkable churches such as Bet Medhane Alem (the Savior of the World), Bet Maryam (House of Mary), Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael, and Bet Golgotha, where the tomb of King Lalibela is located. During your visit, you will learn about the deep religious significance of these structures, the fascinating methods of their construction, and the centuries-old Ethiopian Orthodox traditions that continue to this day. Day 2
Visit Group B Churches & Hike to Asheten Mariam Monastery
After breakfast at the hotel, continue your visit with the Group B churches, located in the southeastern cluster. This group includes Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanuel, and Bet Abba Libanos, all notable for their unique architectural design and spiritual symbolism. Your guide will explain how these churches differ from those in the first cluster in structure, purpose, and historical background. In the afternoon, take an excursion to Asheten Mariam Monastery, which sits high on a mountain overlooking Lalibela. The hike offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and a deeper insight into the monastic lifestyle of the Ethiopian Orthodox monks. The monastery, partially carved into the mountain, houses ancient religious manuscripts, crosses, and other relics. After descending, return to Lalibela town for relaxation and dinner. Neakuto Leab Monastery & Return to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and drive toward the airport. On the way, stop to visit Neakuto Leab Monastery, named after King Lalibela’s successor and built inside a natural cave. This peaceful monastery is known for its spiritual atmosphere and treasured relics, including ancient crosses and manuscripts preserved by the local priests. After the visit, continue to Lalibela Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of your memorable Lalibela pilgrimage and cultural experience. End of the trip. We went to fish market and l had a wonderful time.
