Day 1
You'll be picked up from your hotel and depart from Nairobi making your way to the picturesque shores of Lake Naivasha. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake located on the rim of the Great Rift Valley. It is famous for its birdlife and it's also home to animals such as giraffes and buffalos, as well as velvet and Colobus monkeys. Your day on the lake will include a guided boat safari out on the lake to see hippos and water birds, and a visit to the Crescent Island Sanctuary where you and your kids can walk alongside zebras, giraffes, antelopes, and more. Mid-range tented camp at Lake Naivasha (Naivasha, Kenya) Lunch & dinner (Breakfast not included) Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 2
It wouldn't be a safari in Kenya without a visit to the legendary Masai Mara. You'll depart from Lake Naivasha after breakfast and drive south to the Masai Mara, the home to the Eighth Wonder of the World - the Great Wildebeest Migration. Whatever time of the year you're in the park, you'll get the chance to see lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs, and more. In certain months, during the Wildebeest Migration, the park is flooded with more than 1.7 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebras. You'll enjoy lunch at your lodge before heading out into the park for an afternoon game drive. Mid-range tented camp located just outside Masai Mara NR (Kenya) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 3
You will wake up before dawn for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a Masai Mara sunrise. After a quick cup of coffee, you'll head out into the park to watch as the sun sets fire to the savannah and the big cats take advantage of the morning cool to search for a meal. Alternatively, you can take to the skies with a hot air balloon safari that will see you soar above all of the action before setting down on the plains for a champagne breakfast among the wildlife. Ask your safari expert about adding a hot air balloon adventure to your safari. You'll then return to your lodge for a late breakfast before packing a picnic lunch and heading back out into the park for a day-long exploration of the Masai Mara. After a day full of excitement, you’ll return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. Mid-range tented camp located just outside Masai Mara NR (Kenya) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 4
There's no pulling punches here: this is a long day's driving. Departing after an early breakfast with a packed lunch, you'll enjoy a game drive en route to the Isebania border crossing that separates Tanzania and Kenya. Once your immigration formalities are complete and you've met with your new Tanzanian driver, you'll continue on to the Serengeti. Arriving late in the day, you'll check into your hotel and relax ahead of tomorrow's explorations. It is possible to cut on some travel time by opting for a flight here. Mid-range tented camp located inside Central Serengeti NP (Tanzania) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 5
You'll spend your day driving through this distinct and beautiful region of the park in search of the Wildebeest Migration and the Big Five. As you stay a full day in the Northern part of Serengeti, the chance to see the river crossing of the wildebeests becomes bigger. Almost every day some of the wildebeests are crossing the river looking for new nutrients. There are different crossing points and there might be multiple crossings in one day. Of course you will also need some luck ; it is possible that the wildebeest will not cross during your stay. Your guide will be connected with a radio to hear from (or inform) other guides about the location of the crossing- so you will have the best possible chance of catching a crossing. In the afternoon, you have the option to extend your game drive until sunset or participate in one of the optional activities available at your lodge. These often include nature walks or a sundowner at the lodge. Mid-range tented camp located inside Central Serengeti NP (Tanzania) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 6
You'll start your day immediately after breakfast, driving through the plains of Togoro and the Mbuzi Mawe kopjes on your way to cross the Banagi River into the Seronera region of Central Serengeti. Along the way, you'll spot everything from the enigmatic dik-diks to towering elephants, and everything in between. The Seronera is often known as 'big cat country', and its kopjes and acacias provide an excellent opportunity to spot a pride of lazy lions, sleek cheetahs out on the hunt, and leopards overseeing everything from their lofty perches. The region's hippo pools and wide open spaces provide ample opportunities for game viewing. Your dinner and overnight stay will be in the heart of the Serengeti National Park according to the standard and the type of accommodation requested from our options. Mid-range tented camp located inside Central Serengeti NP (Tanzania) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 7
After breakfast, you will get right on the road back towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Your drive takes us back through the Serengeti via a different route, offering plenty of opportunities to spot the animals that eluded you on day two. As far as the eye can see, you’ll spot thousands upon thousands of animals in herds, wildebeests and zebras migrating together, tall and graceful giraffes, jumping antelopes and gazelles, the powerful African elephant and the most respected group of animals: the predators. You will have the chance to spot lean cheetahs and shy leopards, foraging hyenas, and last but not least, the king himself, the lion. You will have dinner and an overnight stay on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater or in nearby Karatu Town according to the standard and the type of accommodation requested from our options. Mid-range lodge in Karatu (Town, Tanzania) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 8
After breakfast, you'll depart for Ngorongoro Crater, considered by some to be the Eighth Wonder of the World. When you get your first glimpse of this vast, verdant caldera from the panoramic viewpoint, you'll soon understand why it has earned such a lofty reputation. Home to over 120 species of mammal including the fabled Big Five, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the most sought-after safari destinations in the world. It's a particularly good place to see the endangered black rhinoceros enjoying a lonely meal out on the grass plains, as well as a place to see large numbers of hippopotamus enjoying the cool water. From the comfort of your open-top vehicle, you'll be able to observe and photograph some of Africa's most recognizable faces. The crater is home to a large number of predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, and hyenas, a large population of wildebeests, zebras, antelopes, and Cape buffalos. It is truly one of Africa's premier safari destinations. Mid-range lodge located 1-2hr drive from Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 9
You'll make your way to Lake Manyara National Park shortly after breakfast, with a scenic two-hour drive whetting your appetite for your day of exploration. The park is truly a photographer's playground and offers some of the best game viewing in the world. You can expect to see many of Africa's most well-known animals, with the tree-climbing lions a particular treat. These proud predators lounge in acacia trees practically begging to be photographed. Bird watchers will find Lake Manyara to be an absolute delight, with a huge variety of birds on display in the park. Even the novice can expect to be amazed by large flamingo flocks, circling birds of prey, and the brightly coloured lilac-breasted roller. You'll then proceed to Arusha for an overnight stay. Mid-range lodge in Arusha (City, Tanzania) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 10
You'll depart Arusha after breakfast and begin your trip back towards Kenya. The drive itself is a scenic one, and you'll once again go through immigration and meet with your new driver before proceeding to the park. You'll enjoy an afternoon game drive where you'll see herds of wildebeest and zebras, proud lions, skulking hyenas, a variety of antelopes, and some of Kenya's largest herds of elephants - all set against the startling backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight in Amboseli National Park. Mid-range tented camp located just outside Amboseli NP (Kenya) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 11
Wake before the dawn for an unforgettable sunrise game drive within the park. Kilimanjaro never looks quite as beautiful as she does first thing in the morning, and you'll also get to see predators such as leopards, lions, and cheetahs out on the prowl in the cooler morning air. They don't call Amboseli the Royal Court of Kilimanjaro for nothing, and as you take in its large elephant herds and the stunning panorama of Mt. Kilimanjaro, you'll see why this is one of Kenya's most beloved pars. After your morning game drive and a late breakfast, relax at the lodge for a few hours before heading out into the park again in the afternoon. With the animals largely inactive during the warm midday hours, you can get some rest before catching them out and about in the cooling afternoon air. Mid-range tented camp located just outside Amboseli NP (Kenya) All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)
Day 12
You'll be up early today for your opportunity to see Kilimanjaro at dawn. The Roof of Africa is often shy, but in the early morning light, you'll have your best chance to see the tallest mountain on the continent. You'll then make your way back to Nairobi, where you'll be taken to the airport for the continuation of your journey. Breakfast & lunch (Dinner not included) Drinking water (Other drinks not included)

5.0/5Visiting the gorillas in Rwanda has been a longstanding bucket-list trip for my wife and me. We decided that this was to be the year and so we asked Shadows of Africa to design a tour for us to go to Rwanda but also to add on a safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. We were lucky to have been assigned Karin Maki as our consultant as she was so helpful and patient with our wishlist and frequent changes of itinerary. We really felt that her entire focus was on making sure that we got what we wanted. She was responsive to our questions within a few hours and kept in touch with us while we were on our trip to check that everything was going as planned. Karin’s planning was meticulous but it was matched by the Shadows of Africa team’s execution. It was outstanding - everyone turned up every day at exactly the time they were supposed to, everyone was smiling, patient and keen to ensure that we were happy with our safari. In Rwanda our driver was Jeanisse and she got us to the mountains and back with absolutely no drama even though the roads were occasionally tricky with many slow moving vehicles. She also arranged a couple of surprises for us to celebrate our wedding anniversary which we very much appreciated. In Tanzania, after a briefing by Dennis to welcome us, we met our driver Eugen. When he picked us up to take us to the Serengeti he asked us what we particularly wanted to see. We told him that we really wanted to see the big cats and within 3 hours of entering the Serengeti we had seen lion, serval, leopard and cheetah twice - once on a kill. We were totally blown away by that experience and it simply underlines how the team at Shadows of Africa were absolutely dedicated to making this trip the best we have ever had. Eugen was very responsive to any requests we had and was flexible in the starting times each day depending on how we felt. One day he organized a morning drive with a stop for coffee on the plains and in the afternoon we repeated the experience but this time with a glass of wine while we watched the sunset - absolutely magical. Eugen knew the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater so well and with him as a guide we saw pretty much everything we wanted to - and more. My wife and I have travelled the world over the past 40 years or so and we’ve experienced some fabulous trips and destinations but this ranks as one of our best ever trips and that’s entirely due to the Shadows of Africa team - they were all just fantastic.

Shortly after starting my research about a trip to Kenya and Tanzania, it became clear that Shadows of Africa was the leading contender for our trip of a lifetime. Karen, the travel agent for Shadows of Africa, was incredibly communicative, providing several possible itineraries for our desired travel dates. We booked somewhat late (In January, for a late-August/early September adventure) and she was still able to provide us with exceptional options at various price points to suit our budget. Shadows of Africa provided special touches, along with absolutely phenomenal food and beverage options, exceptionally experienced guides, and clean, comfortable safari vehicles. Our guide in Kenya was Joji, who ensured we saw as many wild animals from perfect vantage points as possible, while providing in-depth information about the creatures we were seeing. Our guide in Tanzania was Moody, who was also phenomenal at finding wild animals, never rushing us away from any viewing point and always answering our many questions about each species. We were able to learn so much from both of our guides, and we saw every single species that we had hoped to- far more than we could have found on our own in the same amount of time. The quality of the lodges Karen helped us select, the extensive menu we were treated to during our experience with Shadows of Africa, the warmth and knowledge of our guides, and the truly exceptional adventures we were able to have on our trip would not have been possible without this absolutely phenomenal company.

Epic! Amazing! Exceptional! But words really can't do justice to the the experience we had with Shadows of Africa Tanzanian Safari. We felt like we were part of a National Geographic special. We saw so many animals, so close up. Herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, lions, hyenas, warthogs, moneys, baboons. We counted more than 45 different species of animals and birds, and I'm sure our list is not complete. We spent eight days on safari in Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, which also included a visit to a Maasai village, a sunrise balloon ride followed by three nights at a resort on Zanzibar. The accommodations were amazing. The lodges were beautiful and even the tent camps were way more luxurious than we expected, complete with giraffes walking by and lions roaring at night. Our guide was Alex Pao (or Poa?) and he was exceptional!!! We were a group of six women and he kept us all in line:) Knowledgeable, funny, professional, accommodating. And finally, I would like to give a shout out to the Shadows of Africa team -- Karen Maki, Frank and Inge! They were wonderful, responsive, accommodating. I can't say enough good things about them or our experience as a whole and would highly recommend them to anyone considering a Safari experience!

Apologies as this will be a long review, as I tend to write a lot. The 11 day safari with Shadows of Africa easily was the best trip of my life. First, let me start with Karen. Karen treats you like she's been your friend for a long time that just happens to be a safari specialist as she's extremely personable and clearly wants you to have the best possible experience. Despite being 10 hours ahead of me, she responded to any and all questions I have within minutes and I question if she ever takes a break. Throughout the whole process, she has been amazing...Karen, if you read this, I can't thank you enough. My other notable tour specialist was Frank that handled everything in Tanzania. Frank...Frank is on top of everything, literally calling me the second we got to the Tanzanian border, giving us suggestions on how to tip, what to do, and literally was on top of everything in Tanzania. Also, Frank is extremely genuine as well, following up daily regarding how things are going, what we love(d), and is again is just on top of everything. Secondly, the guides. Our first guide was George who clearly has a ton of experience in Masa Mara and Kenya, and was on top of where to go and was on top of where all the animals were. George is very nice guy and on day 2 of safari I was elated on the experience he gave us and also can't say enough great things about that man. Our second guide, Charles Joseph, is younger, super enthusiastic, and is obviously very proud of his country and loves sharing whatever he can about Tanzania as well as anything related to plants and animals. Also, after traveling with him for a week I'm seriously impressed on how he can remember where everything is throughout such a massive area without a map, as I need GPS to go across town. We did have a transfer, Nickson, great young kid who is also enthusiastic about his town and country; hope his pig farming business goes well. Lastly, our last guide, Martin, friggin pro at everything Amboseli, suggesting good photo shots of Kilimanjaro, animals, and again, extremely knowledgeable about the region. Lastly, a far as the accommodations and food, everything was top notch. We did do the 11 day tour and the nights in Masa Mara and Northern Sarengheti were in raised tents, but the staff more than made up for it as, how often in your life do you see lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, elephants, etc... My only one real suggestion is if you do plan on doing the 11 day tour, if you're looking for gifts, wait to go to the large shop in Arusha as they by far have the best prices for souvenirs, as the local shops outside Masa Mara are kind of a rip. To finish, we loved our safari and if/when I come back to Africa, I will be sure to contact Shadows of Africa as they went above and beyond.
