Visit nearby Lake Assal and observe camel caravans carrying salt art of an ancient Afar tradition still practiced today. In the afternoon, drive across lava fields and desert terrain to reach the base of Erta Ale volcano. After an early dinner at the campsite, begin a one-hour trek under the stars to the summit.
