14-Day Kenya & Tanzania Wildebeest Calving - Jan-March

Amboseli National Park, Botswana

14-Day Kenya & Tanzania Wildebeest Calving - Jan-March

5.0 / 5 · 176 reviews Offered by Camptrek Safaris 14-Day

Overview

This safari focuses on the peak wildebeest calving season in the Ndutu area of Tanzania, typically between January and March each year. This is when the massive herds congregate on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area to give birth. It is the absolute busiest time, with thousands of wildebeest born daily. The abundance of vulnerable young attracts a high concentration of predators, including lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, making for dramatic wildlife viewing.

Arrival

You'll be collected from the airport. Accommodation before the tour starts can be arranged for an extra cost.

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (200 km - 4-5 hrs)

Day 1

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (200 km - 4-5 hrs)

Our company representative will pick you up from the airport or your accommodation facility. After a short briefing about the safari, you will be handed over to your experienced driver-guide in the morning for a scenic drive southeast towards Amboseli National Park, arriving in good time for lunch. You'll embark on your first afternoon game drive exploring this acacia woodland, freshwater swamps, scrub brush, and open plains in search of wildlife, returning at sunset for dinner and your overnight stay. Amboseli National Park (392 sq km) is famous for the breathtaking view of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest freestanding mountain on earth and the tallest in Africa (5,895m). Amboseli is also an elephant’s paradise where the massive African savannah elephants roam from swamp to swamp, grazing all day. Because of the abundance of water and pasture, other animals to be spotted here are cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, gnus, gazelles, hippos, and many others. Day 2

Amboseli National Park

You'll leave the camp after breakfast, carrying your packed lunch to be enjoyed in the wild. You'll spend the whole day exploring the marshlands and swamps of Amboseli, which are fed by subterranean water channels. Water is abundant throughout the year, and so is the pasture. Elephants and various other herbivores are found here. You'll return to the lodge late in the afternoon after a long exploration of this 392 sq km park. You'll also have the option of starting the day with an early morning game drive to search for animals when they're at their most active. Then, return to the lodge for a relaxed breakfast and lunch (depending on the location of your lodge). You'll spend the hottest part of the day relaxing in the camp, reading your favorite book or just listening to music while observing the birds. Afterward, you'll head off in the afternoon at 4:00 pm for another drive through the park. You'll return to the lodge at sunset for dinner and your overnight stay. Day 3

Amboseli to Lake Manyara National Park (320 km - 5-6 hrs)

Today, after breakfast, prepare for a long but very scenic and exciting drive. You will head towards the border separating Kenya and Tanzania (Namanga border post). Prepare to pay for your visa, which costs $50- $100 depending on your nationality (visa cards are NOT accepted). After clearing the border immigration process, you will transfer vehicles and join your Tanzanian driver-guide, who will welcome you and proceed further with your journey, stopping for lunch in Arusha. After lunch, you'll take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the day-to-day activities of the locals around this small but busy tourist transit town before proceeding further east, arriving in Lake Manyara in mid-afternoon. You have a free afternoon to enjoy the lodge facilities like swimming and bird watching, or maybe relax by the poolside, reading your favorite book, or writing your journal in preparation for a busy day tomorrow. Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro Crater (80 km - 2-3 hrs)

Day 4

Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro Crater (80 km - 2-3 hrs)

After a leisurely breakfast today, you'll pack your bags and drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a morning game drive. During this time, you'll seek out active wildlife such as baboons and dik-diks, which forage for food beneath acacia trees. You may also encounter large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra grazing on the sun-drenched plains. In the acacia woodland, keep an eye out for the region's famous tree-climbing lions. For lunch, enjoy a fresh African buffet prepared from local farm produce at a nearby homestead. Following lunch, you'll visit a local village where you can either ride on a tuk-tuk or walk through rice fields, observing the local community along the way. You will also have the chance to sample a local banana beer during your village walk. After your village experience, you'll make your way to Ngorongoro Crater, ascending the outer wall through dense vegetation. You’ll arrive at your hotel on the rim of the caldera in time for dinner and an overnight stay. Ngorongoro Crater

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater

This morning, you'll descend into the crater, arriving ahead of most visitors — thanks to the ideal location of your accommodations on the crater’s rim. You'll descend onto the crater floor for the half-day crater tour. There are only 2 roads that connect the crater rim with the crater floor, one for driving down and one for driving up. The crater is roughly 20 km (12 mi) wide and 600 m (2,000 ft) deep. Once you’ve reached the top of the caldera, it takes about 45 minutes to descend to the crater floor. The floor is home to a rich and highly concentrated wildlife. Some 20,000 mammals of size live there, including about 20 black rhinos, making the crater the best place in Tanzania to see rhinos. The animals here are less wary of humans and vehicles, and as a result, it's easier to watch them from up close where animals roam the lakes, rivers, and hills. Later, you'll ascend and return to your lodge at the rim for dinner and an overnight stay. This morning, after breakfast, you will drive to the expansive and wildlife-rich Serengeti National Park, navigating through its stunning combination of savanna grasslands and volcanic hills. Along the way, you'll stop for a privately guided tour of Olduvai Gorge, a significant site for prehuman hominid fossils. Renowned palaeontologists, Mary and Louis Leakey, made many important discoveries here, including the remains of the "Nutcracker Man", who lived approximately 1.75 million years ago. During your visit, you will explore the on-site museum, enjoy the views from the lookout point, and observe the excavations that revealed 3.7-million-year-old footprints and the 1.8-million-year-old skull of a human ancestor. Following this fascinating visit, you will continue your journey to Ndutu National Park, where you'll enjoy a game drive, offering the chance to spot millions of wildebeest calving during this spectacular season. An amazing 10 days camping safari through Kenya

We had an amazing 10 days camping safari through Kenya. The trip was very well organised and Mambo's food was delicious. Eric took us to amazing game driving where we saw a great number of animals and received many interesing explanations about wild life. This was an incredible and unforgetable trip, thanks to the professionnalism and the good vibes of Eric and Mambo !

Amazing 10 days trip in safari/camping

We returned home amazed after a 10-day camping safari trip with Eric and Mambo across Kenya. Travelling with them was so easy, so meticulously organised and professional that we felt completely at ease throughout the trip, allowing us to fully enjoy the landscapes, culture, game drives and animals. The entire trip was an opportunity for excellent exchanges and discussions with our guides, allowing us to discover the country and the regions we travelled through in greater depth. Thank you again for this amazing trip!

Awesome!!!

My trip to Kenya was made great because we used Camptrek Safaris for our Safari excusrsion. Three things remained constant on our trip: 1. They were always on time 2. They kept us engaged in all parts of our trip 3. They were always kind We were a group of 12 traveling with our 96 year old patriarch and they made everyone feel special as if the trip was just for them. The team was top notch and I absolutely had no complaints. If you are looking for a team that will put you first and make you feel special Camptrek Safaris is the team.

Excellent Safari and value for money

We (a family of five from Denmark with age of children being 10, 13 and 15 years) had a very good private safari with Camptrek Safaris. We booked a 4 night/5 day safari that took us to Masai Mare, Lake Nakuru, Naiwasha and Hell’s Gate National Park. Lucy was always very fast and helpful when communicating with her during the booking from Denmark, and she was there to send us off in Nairobi and when we came back after the safari. And our driver, Pili Pili, was exellent. Thank you CampTrek Safaris. This is a trustworthy company. Thanks!
