Duration
22-Day
Lower Zambezi National Park, Botswana
The trade route is an extraordinary journey across South Eastern Africa. Spend active days canoeing on the Zambezi River, snorkelling in the warm Indian Ocean, game viewing in the world-famous Kruger and bush walks in South Luangwa. We recommend Malaria prophylactics. Border crossings can be slow, so you need to be prepared for the experience. This journey has challenges and it's for the adventurous traveller but also has magnificent highlights.

A transfer from the airport can be arranged for an extra cost. Accommodation before the tour starts can be arranged for an extra cost.
Day 1
The group will meet in Livingstone, in Zambia at 2:00 am. You'll have two days to explore Victoria Falls, a Natural Wonder of the World plunging into the Zambezi Gorge. Adventure activities abound: white water rafting on the mighty Zambezi, or a 111m bungee jump (at your own expense). Pre-tour accommodation and airport transfers can be arranged. Alternatively, you can make your way to the departure at Victoria Falls Waterfront, Zambia. Participation is an essential part of your safari. From putting up your tent to packing the truck in the morning—it’s all part of the adventure. Your tour leaders will do all the meal preparation but we do ask the clients to help (on rotation) with the washing up. There are some long travel days which means early mornings. Therefore, we all need to get involved to make the day run efficiently. Breakfast (Lunch & dinner not included) Drinks not included
Day 3
A long drive takes you across the rolling Miombo forested hills of Southern Zambia to the Kafue River where we'll camp the night. Expect a travel day of about 10 hours. Your campsite for the night has good ablution facilities, hot showers, a swimming pool and a bar. All meals included Drinks not included
Day 4
You will paddle down the mighty Zambezi River, home of the tribal mythical god—Nyami Nyami. You will continue canoeing past local riverside villages and magnificent scenery. We'll camp wild on an island in the heart of untamed Africa. The following morning, you'll continue your canoe safari through an area teeming with elephants, hippos and other wildlife. You will be collected by a motorboat and transferred back upriver to your starting campsite. Inside Lower Zambezi NP (Zambia) All meals included Drinks not included
Day 6
You will head to Lusaka to stock up on supplies in the bustling shops and markets of the Zambian capital. Taking the great east road, you'll drive this afternoon until sunset. (This is a very long day of travel but it also allows you to get to South Luangwa sooner on day 7). Mid-range hotel in Petauke (Town, Zambia) All meals included Drinks not included
Day 7
You will make your way down into “the valley” of the South Luangwa National Park. This remote region is one of Africa’s finest wildlife sanctuaries where hippos, elephants, lions and leopards abound. You will camp on the banks of the Luangwa River and explore the area on two game walks and two open 4WD game drives; one at night with spotlights, to see nocturnal animals. (In the green season, December–April, walks may not be possible in which case you’ll do extra game drives). Inside South Luangwa NP (Zambia) All meals included Drinks not included
Day 10
You will arrive in Malawi “the warm heart of Africa.” Here, you will re-stock with fresh supplies in the markets of Lilongwe before heading to your camp on the beach at Lake Malawi. You’ll take a boat out to the islands to explore the fantastic bays and coves in the area. You will also experience beautiful sunsets from the comfort of the camp. All meals included Drinks not included
Day 12
Heading south again, you will enter Mozambique at the Zobue border post. Making your way back over the Zambezi you'll travel through the Tete region, camping en route in this remote part of Mozambique (campsite facilities are very basic). You can expect two long travel days as we transit across Mozambique. All meals included Drinks not included
Day 14
Upon reaching the Indian Ocean, you will stay overnight in Vilankulos. You'll take a full day to explore Magaruque Island on a local dhow—a traditional ocean-going trade vessel. Beautiful blue sea, snorkelling, expansive white beaches and some excellent seafood will be available—what a day! Dinner on day 15 is an own expense meal. Budget tented campless than 1hr drive from Vilanculos (Town & Beach, Mozambique) All meals included Drinks not included
Day 16
Arab influences are strong in Inhambane dating back to when slaves, ivory, gold and spices were traded. Explore Inhambane and its 200-year-old cathedral, before moving to your accommodation next to the beach. Dhow rides and scuba diving on coral reefs are available at your own expense. You will also cover the costs of your dinner on day 17. Mid-range self catering accommodation located at Barra Beach (Mozambique) All meals included Drinks not included
Day 18
You will turn south along the coast to a secluded fishing lodge on the beach north of Xai-Xai. The lodge is perched on the coastal dunes with a magnificent view of the surrounding natural bush and expansive beach. Low tide exposes a long rocky reef parallel to the beach, which creates a shallow, calm pool ideal for snorkelling and swimming. For your last night on the beach, you'll enjoy a fish braai (barbeque) dinner at the lodge restaurant overlooking the warm Indian Ocean. Mid-range chaletnear Xai-Xai (Town & Beach, Mozambique) Breakfast & lunch (Dinner not included) Drinks not included
Day 19
You will travel through the transfrontier Limpopo Park into Kruger National Park. You will visit the big game country on exciting game drives to spot lions, giraffes and the mighty elephants. Relaxing in the tranquil bush, you will experience a land forgotten by time, a true African wilderness. Inside Kruger NP (South Africa) All meals included Drinks not included
Day 21
Departing Kruger, you will stay overnight at a private game lodge in the Greater Kruger for your final dinner under the stars. The beautiful Makuwa Safari Lodge is the destination for the final night of this tour. You will spend the evening in the sparkling pool or resting in the comfortable rooms. Mid-range lodge located less than 1hr drive from Central Kruger NP (South Africa) All meals included Drinks not included
Day 22
In the morning, we'll tour the Panorama Route, visiting God’s Window and the Three Sisters. You will return to Johannesburg in the afternoon, sun-tanned, laid-back and ready to rejoin life. The tour ends at 5:00 pm at the Johannesburg Airport. Breakfast (Lunch & dinner not included) Drinks not included

5.0/5I started at Victoria Falls and travelled through Botswana and Namibia, camping for most of 21 nights. I was a bit apprehensive as my trip had been delayed 3 years, but Bruce and Grace's communication was helpful, friendly and positive and made me feel happy. The trip itself was magnificent, it surpassed any expectations I had. My guides, Patrick and Moses were knowledgeable, humorous, hard working and catered meals to a high standard. I was well briefed each day about the itinerary, what to expect and lists of highlights. Geography, political and social information as well as superb information about the wildlife was constant and I gained such insights. I was comfortable in my tent and in the van - P and M always made sure to check I was okay. I really felt like I saw what was special, the itinerary was well set. I left Livingstone and Africa feeling like I left home, with a love that grew because my experience was so enriching. I can't thank Sunways, Patrick and Moses enough for the experience of a lifetime. My tour was NB21 and I would do it all again - though I have been told of the Malawi Mozambique tour and am saving my pennies.

We took the 16 day accommodated Game Tracker through South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. We enjoyed every day of our trip. It was our first safari and so everything was new to us; we never tired of seeing the birds and animals and even just driving though the countryside. Our guides Chris and Joseph were outstanding. They always gave us a briefing about what to expect the next day, after dinner in the evening. They provided a wealth of information about the birds, animals, the culture and the landscape and even the economies of the countries we visited. We had a nice mix off meals in lodges/restaurants and meals made by the guides. Everything was delicious and by and large very healthy as well. While we were in Okavango, we had koodoo (farmed, not wild) stew. The lodges selected by Sunway were great- very comfortable and they usually had very nice grounds that were good for bird watching. Some of the restaurants are still learning about the logistics of serving customers and getting them their bills. But the guides are aware of this and so we usually placed our orders ahead of time so there were not long delays getting our meals. We absolutely detest camping, so we were not big fans of the accommodation in the Okavango Delta. If you like camping, it would be great. But anyway, we loved the whole Okavango experience. It was definitely worth any shortcomings with the accommodation. The local guides selected by Sunway for the most part were excellent. for example, our guide for Thebes River in Botswana seemed to know exactly how to position the boat and the safari vehicle to get the best pictures. Our favourite parts of the trip were the Thebes River cruise and game drive and the salt pan (for the birds). The vehicle we used to get from venue to venue was called the red elephant. It is a custom designed truck. The seating was comfortable and you got good views from the windows. We always had snacks available, mostly local fruits. Of course what everyone goes on a safari for is the animals. We got great views of lions, buffalo, hippos, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, koodoos, impala, monkeys and much more in many of the places we visited. The Sunway trip was great value and we would definitely consider another trip with Sunway
