Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel for check-in and relaxation. Later, visit one of Ethiopia’s famous specialty coffee houses to discover the rich history and traditions of Ethiopian Arabica coffee, believed to have originated in the Ethiopian highlands. Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony with freshly roasted beans prepared by local hosts while learning about the country’s diverse coffee regions, including Sidama, Yirgacheffe, and Bale. Sidama Coffee Highlands Experience
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a domestic flight to Hawassa, the gateway to Ethiopia’s renowned southern coffee regions. Upon arrival, drive through the scenic Sidama Highlands, famous for producing some of the finest Arabica coffee in the world. Visit local coffee farms and traditional washing stations to learn about the entire coffee production process, from hand-picking ripe coffee cherries to wet and dry processing methods. Meet local farmers and cooperative members to gain insight into the cultural and economic importance of coffee in Ethiopian daily life. Today you will explore Yirgacheffe, one of Ethiopia’s most famous specialty coffee regions known worldwide for its floral aroma and delicate coffee flavors. Visit local coffee cooperatives and traditional washing stations to observe how high-quality Arabica beans are sorted, fermented, dried, and prepared for export. Enjoy a guided walk through lush shade-grown coffee forests while learning about sustainable farming practices and the natural environment that makes Yirgacheffe coffee unique. Participate in a traditional coffee roasting and tasting session with local families and experience authentic Ethiopian hospitality and culture. After breakfast, travel toward the Bale Mountains region and continue into the remarkable Harenna Forest, one of the last remaining natural wild Arabica coffee forests in the world. This ancient rainforest is known for its biodiversity, dramatic scenery, and naturally growing forest coffee that has been harvested by local communities for generations. Enjoy guided forest walks while learning about traditional coffee collection methods used by Oromo coffee gatherers. Visit remote forest coffee areas where coffee grows naturally under the shade of giant indigenous trees without plantation farming. Experience a traditional forest coffee roasting demonstration and taste freshly prepared organic wild coffee surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the rainforest. I visited Lalibela for two days and Ayaliwu, my guide, was arranged by my travel agent in Addis. He was a true expert on the history of this stunning site as well as its broader cultural context. Ayaliwu was able to provide detailed information about the history of the Rock-cut churches. He payed attention to the details and was very well-prepared. He was also very solicitous of my physical capabilities and always found solutions for me. My visit to the churches of Lalibela was unforgettable thanks to him! I did a small private tour with Ayalew ! He is an experienced guide with a wealth of knowledge and an amazing sense of humour. He is fully accredited and I feel I walked away from my three days with him with a better understanding of the history and landscape of not just the churches, but also of Lalibela and Ethiopia . Despite the travel advisory, the town of Lalibela was very friendly and secure . There was a strong military presence in the town but very few tourists. Thanks hidden Ethiopia for such a lovely adventure !
