Fly to Lalibela – Rock-Hewn Churches
Morning flight to Lalibela. Upon arrival, meet your guide, transfer to the hotel, and check in. In the afternoon, visit the first group of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site carved entirely from solid rock in the 12th century. Overnight at hotel. In the morning, take an excursion to Yemrehana Kristos, Na’akuto La’ab, or Asheten Mariam Church, located in the scenic Lasta Mountains. In the afternoon, explore the second and third groups of Lalibela churches, including tunnels and trenches connecting the sites. Overnight at hotel. Drive Lalibela – Semera (Afar Region)
After breakfast, drive from Lalibela to Semera, the capital of the Afar Region. Enjoy spectacular views of the Lasta Mountains before descending into the Afar lowlands, where the landscape, altitude, and climate change dramatically. Arrive in Semera in the evening. Early morning drive from Semera to Hamed Ela, the base camp in the Danakil Depression. Visit Lake Assale, one of the lowest points in Africa, and explore the surreal landscapes of Dallol, famous for its colorful sulfur formations, salt pillars, and acidic pools. Early morning visit to the rock-salt mining area and additional exploration of Dallol. Later, drive to Dodome village, then continue to the base of Erta Ale Volcano. In the late afternoon, trek to the crater to witness the dramatic lava lake at sunset. Spend the night near the crater, watching the glowing lava under the stars. Overnight open-air camping.
