Tarangire National Park

Day 1

Tarangire National Park

Depart from your hotel in Arusha or Arusha airport and head to Tarangire National Park. Once you've entered Tarangire, you'll begin your game drive across a rich vista of endless golden savannah that surrounds the Tarangire River. The river itself runs throughout the year and is a vital source of water for the animals of the region during the dry season. Lined with acacia and Baobab trees, the river is regularly visited by the park's large elephant population as well as other herbivores such as zebras and antelopes. A picnic lunch with a view of the river is a great way to take it all in, but you'll have to keep on your toes as the local monkey population does its best to separate you from your lunch! Driving through the park you'll also have the opportunity to see lions, leopards, cape buffalo, and a huge variety of antelopes. After game drive you go to the lodge for dinner & overnight. Manyara National Park

Day 2

Manyara National Park

You'll depart from your lodge after breakfast for the drive to Lake Manyara National Park. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour. The park is truly a photographer's playground and offers some of the best game viewing in the world. You can expect to see many of Africa's most well-known animals, with the tree-climbing lions a particular treat. These proud predators lounge in acacia trees practically begging to be photographed. Bird-watchers will find Lake Manyara is an absolute delight, with a huge variety of birds on display in the park. Even the novice can expect to be amazed by large flamingo flocks, circling birds of prey, and the brightly coloured lilac breasted roller. You'll then return to your chosen accommodation for dinner and a good night's rest. Lake Eyasi - Hadzabe and Datoga Tribes

Day 3

Lake Eyasi - Hadzabe and Datoga Tribes

You'll be up before breakfast today, as you'll be joining the Hadzabe bushmen to experience their traditional way of life! One of the last true bushman tribes in Africa, the Hadzabe live very much as they always have despite the rapid development of Tanzania. With only 2,000 members, the Hadzabe tribe are a fascinating people who offer us a window into how life in Tanzania was in the past. After a late breakfast, you'll have the opportunity for a drive around Lake Eyasi proper. While this shallow soda lake is not home to the same variety of wildlife you'll find in a national park, you'll have the chance to spot a variety of bird and mammal life. On occasion, flamingos and hippos even call the lake home. You'll also have time to meet with the Datoga people. Mostly farmers and cattle breeders, these fascinating people offer another insight into tribal life in Tanzania. Once your day's activities have been completed, you'll return to your lodge for overnight. Mid-range lodge located at Lake Eyasi All meals included Drinking water (Other drinks not included)

Lake Eyasi - Serengeti National Park

Day 4

Lake Eyasi - Serengeti National Park

We'll take an early breakfast, as we've got a big day of exploration and adventure ahead of us! We'll begin the day with the scenic drive towards the Serengeti. Along the way we'll pass through the mist-shrouded rainforests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you might be lucky enough to glimpse cape buffalo, baboons, or even elephants and leopards in the dense undergrowth. It's a nearly four hour drive to the Serengeti park gates, but you can choose to break up the drive with one of the optional activities. After a delicious lunch at the Serengeti National Park picnic area, it’s time to explore the Serengeti itself. Witness Africa’s iconic savannah landscape and be amazed by the sheer number of animals that roam these grassy plains. Dinner and overnight in the heart of the Serengeti National Park according to the standard and the type of accommodation requested from our options. Day 5

Serengeti National Park

Today you can choose when you will do game drive and when you want to relax in the lodge. You can wake before dawn to take part in a sunrise game drive. It's an ideal time to see lions, leopards, and cheetahs in action as well as the early morning movements of the wildebeest, zebra, and other herbivores. After your unforgettable morning, you'll return to your lodge for a late breakfast and to freshen up before hitting the road again with a picnic lunch / or to stay in the lodge in the afternoon to enjoy the view from the mess tent or the platform in front of your room. You can also have a normal morning game drive after breakfast, and return to the lodge for hot lunch, and start another game drive in the late afternoon. You have another option to take to the skies with a sunrise hot air balloon safari and champagne breakfast. Speak with your safari expert about adding this once in a lifetime experience to your safari. Day 6

Serengeti - Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After breakfast, we get right on the road back towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Our drive takes us back through the Serengeti via a different route, offering plenty of opportunities to spot the animals that eluded you on day two. As far as the eye can see, you’ll spot thousands upon thousands of animals in herds; wildebeests and zebras migrating together, tall and graceful giraffes, jumping antelopes and gazelles, the powerful African elephant and the most respected group of animals: the predators. You will have the chance to spot lean cheetahs and shy leopards, foraging hyenas, and last but not least, the king himself; the lion. Once arrived in Ngorongoro Conservation Area you have the chance to visit an original Maasai Boma. The Maasai is the only tribe that is allowed to live inside this area. Dinner and overnight on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater or in nearby Karatu Town according to the standard and the type of accommodation requested from our options. Day 7

Ngorongoro crater - Arusha

After breakfast, you'll depart for Ngorongoro Crater; considered by some to be the Eighth Wonder of the World. When you get your first glimpse of this vast, verdant caldera from the panoramic viewpoint, you'll soon understand why it has earned such a lofty reputation. Home to over 120 species of mammal including the fabled Big Five, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the most sought after safari destinations in the world. It's a particularly good place to see the endangered black rhinoceros enjoying a lonely meal out on the grass plains, as well as a place to see large numbers of hippopotamus enjoying the cool water. The crater is home to a large number of predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, and hyenas, as well as a large population of wildebeest, zebras, antelope, cape buffalo, and more. After the thrills and excitement of the day, you will have a picnic lunch by the park's famous hippo pool before returning to Arusha airport or to your hotel in Arusha. Simply Outstanding

Visiting the gorillas in Rwanda has been a longstanding bucket-list trip for my wife and me. We decided that this was to be the year and so we asked Shadows of Africa to design a tour for us to go to Rwanda but also to add on a safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. We were lucky to have been assigned Karin Maki as our consultant as she was so helpful and patient with our wishlist and frequent changes of itinerary. We really felt that her entire focus was on making sure that we got what we wanted. She was responsive to our questions within a few hours and kept in touch with us while we were on our trip to check that everything was going as planned. Karin’s planning was meticulous but it was matched by the Shadows of Africa team’s execution. It was outstanding - everyone turned up every day at exactly the time they were supposed to, everyone was smiling, patient and keen to ensure that we were happy with our safari. In Rwanda our driver was Jeanisse and she got us to the mountains and back with absolutely no drama even though the roads were occasionally tricky with many slow moving vehicles. She also arranged a couple of surprises for us to celebrate our wedding anniversary which we very much appreciated. In Tanzania, after a briefing by Dennis to welcome us, we met our driver Eugen. When he picked us up to take us to the Serengeti he asked us what we particularly wanted to see. We told him that we really wanted to see the big cats and within 3 hours of entering the Serengeti we had seen lion, serval, leopard and cheetah twice - once on a kill. We were totally blown away by that experience and it simply underlines how the team at Shadows of Africa were absolutely dedicated to making this trip the best we have ever had. Eugen was very responsive to any requests we had and was flexible in the starting times each day depending on how we felt. One day he organized a morning drive with a stop for coffee on the plains and in the afternoon we repeated the experience but this time with a glass of wine while we watched the sunset - absolutely magical. Eugen knew the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater so well and with him as a guide we saw pretty much everything we wanted to - and more. My wife and I have travelled the world over the past 40 years or so and we’ve experienced some fabulous trips and destinations but this ranks as one of our best ever trips and that’s entirely due to the Shadows of Africa team - they were all just fantastic.

Beyond fabulous!!!

Shortly after starting my research about a trip to Kenya and Tanzania, it became clear that Shadows of Africa was the leading contender for our trip of a lifetime. Karen, the travel agent for Shadows of Africa, was incredibly communicative, providing several possible itineraries for our desired travel dates. We booked somewhat late (In January, for a late-August/early September adventure) and she was still able to provide us with exceptional options at various price points to suit our budget. Shadows of Africa provided special touches, along with absolutely phenomenal food and beverage options, exceptionally experienced guides, and clean, comfortable safari vehicles. Our guide in Kenya was Joji, who ensured we saw as many wild animals from perfect vantage points as possible, while providing in-depth information about the creatures we were seeing. Our guide in Tanzania was Moody, who was also phenomenal at finding wild animals, never rushing us away from any viewing point and always answering our many questions about each species. We were able to learn so much from both of our guides, and we saw every single species that we had hoped to- far more than we could have found on our own in the same amount of time. The quality of the lodges Karen helped us select, the extensive menu we were treated to during our experience with Shadows of Africa, the warmth and knowledge of our guides, and the truly exceptional adventures we were able to have on our trip would not have been possible without this absolutely phenomenal company.

Epic! Trip of a lifetime!!!

Epic! Amazing! Exceptional! But words really can't do justice to the the experience we had with Shadows of Africa Tanzanian Safari. We felt like we were part of a National Geographic special. We saw so many animals, so close up. Herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, lions, hyenas, warthogs, moneys, baboons. We counted more than 45 different species of animals and birds, and I'm sure our list is not complete. We spent eight days on safari in Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, which also included a visit to a Maasai village, a sunrise balloon ride followed by three nights at a resort on Zanzibar. The accommodations were amazing. The lodges were beautiful and even the tent camps were way more luxurious than we expected, complete with giraffes walking by and lions roaring at night. Our guide was Alex Pao (or Poa?) and he was exceptional!!! We were a group of six women and he kept us all in line:) Knowledgeable, funny, professional, accommodating. And finally, I would like to give a shout out to the Shadows of Africa team -- Karen Maki, Frank and Inge! They were wonderful, responsive, accommodating. I can't say enough good things about them or our experience as a whole and would highly recommend them to anyone considering a Safari experience!

Easily the best experience of my life

Apologies as this will be a long review, as I tend to write a lot. The 11 day safari with Shadows of Africa easily was the best trip of my life. First, let me start with Karen. Karen treats you like she's been your friend for a long time that just happens to be a safari specialist as she's extremely personable and clearly wants you to have the best possible experience. Despite being 10 hours ahead of me, she responded to any and all questions I have within minutes and I question if she ever takes a break. Throughout the whole process, she has been amazing...Karen, if you read this, I can't thank you enough. My other notable tour specialist was Frank that handled everything in Tanzania. Frank...Frank is on top of everything, literally calling me the second we got to the Tanzanian border, giving us suggestions on how to tip, what to do, and literally was on top of everything in Tanzania. Also, Frank is extremely genuine as well, following up daily regarding how things are going, what we love(d), and is again is just on top of everything. Secondly, the guides. Our first guide was George who clearly has a ton of experience in Masa Mara and Kenya, and was on top of where to go and was on top of where all the animals were. George is very nice guy and on day 2 of safari I was elated on the experience he gave us and also can't say enough great things about that man. Our second guide, Charles Joseph, is younger, super enthusiastic, and is obviously very proud of his country and loves sharing whatever he can about Tanzania as well as anything related to plants and animals. Also, after traveling with him for a week I'm seriously impressed on how he can remember where everything is throughout such a massive area without a map, as I need GPS to go across town. We did have a transfer, Nickson, great young kid who is also enthusiastic about his town and country; hope his pig farming business goes well. Lastly, our last guide, Martin, friggin pro at everything Amboseli, suggesting good photo shots of Kilimanjaro, animals, and again, extremely knowledgeable about the region. Lastly, a far as the accommodations and food, everything was top notch. We did do the 11 day tour and the nights in Masa Mara and Northern Sarengheti were in raised tents, but the staff more than made up for it as, how often in your life do you see lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, elephants, etc... My only one real suggestion is if you do plan on doing the 11 day tour, if you're looking for gifts, wait to go to the large shop in Arusha as they by far have the best prices for souvenirs, as the local shops outside Masa Mara are kind of a rip. To finish, we loved our safari and if/when I come back to Africa, I will be sure to contact Shadows of Africa as they went above and beyond.
