But the reward is immense inside are 1,500 year old frescoes, centuries-old manuscripts, and soul-stirring views across the sandstone cliffs. Along the journey, pass through Afar villages, volcanic formations, and stark desert landscapes. Arrive in the late afternoon near Dallol or Lake Assale, where you’ll set up camp. The surreal silence, blazing heat, and lunar-like views create an otherworldly atmosphere. Dinner will be prepared by the expedition team, and you'll camp under the stars in the desert wilderness. Meet Afar salt miners, who carve slabs of salt and transport them by camel caravans, continuing an ancient trade tradition. Visit the vast salt lake of Assale, where the earth reflects the sky.
