Day 1
Early morning departure from Addis Ababa and scenic drive through Ethiopia’s highlands to Dinsho, the gateway to Bale Mountains National Park. Arrive at park headquarters and settle into your lodge before beginning an afternoon forest walk. Explore lush montane forest habitats where you may encounter endemic wildlife such as Mountain nyala and Menelik’s bushbuck, along with rich birdlife. This relaxed introduction offers your first taste of Bale’s unique biodiversity and peaceful mountain environment, preparing you for higher altitude exploration on the following days. Day 2
After breakfast, drive deeper into Bale Mountains National Park toward the spectacular Sanetti Plateau, one of Africa’s largest Afro-alpine ecosystems at over 4,000 meters above sea level. Search for the rare Ethiopian wolf, giant mole-rat, and endemic high-altitude bird species while enjoying breathtaking mountain scenery and wide open landscapes. Continue south into the lush Harenna Forest, a dramatic contrast to the plateau above. Explore dense rainforest, bamboo groves, waterfalls, and wild coffee forest areas while learning about the region’s unique ecology. In the late afternoon, drive to Robe for overnight stay at a comfortable hotel with mountain views and warm hospitality. Day 3
After breakfast in Robe, begin the scenic drive back to Addis Ababa through the beautiful Bale highlands and rural Ethiopian countryside. There will be opportunities for short stops, local coffee breaks, and optional visits to small roadside markets depending on timing and client interest. This final travel day offers a relaxed conclusion to the Bale Mountains adventure while reflecting on the unique wildlife, forests, and Afro-alpine scenery experienced during the tour. I did a small private tour with Ayalew ! He is an experienced guide with a wealth of knowledge and an amazing sense of humour. He is fully accredited and I feel I walked away from my three days with him with a better understanding of the history and landscape of not just the churches, but also of Lalibela and Ethiopia . Despite the travel advisory, the town of Lalibela was very friendly and secure . There was a strong military presence in the town but very few tourists. Thanks hidden Ethiopia for such a lovely adventure !
